German POWs in Egypt's Army

WWII EG 1949.1.22 Nazi Prisoners in Egypt Army (Nation)+.jpg

Citing "French Intelligence," The Nation reported that some 6,000 Germans were recruited from amongst German POWs in Egypt for use in Arab armies. Significant here is the presence of notorious war criminal Oskar Dirlewanger. Though it was not largely known in 1949, Dirlewanger was killed while under arrest in 1945. Nevertheless, his name has appeared amongst The Cairo List as recently as 2011. Contemporary documentation casts doubt on the high number of Germans reported in the press, but this document shows an early example of the truth and falshoods that combined in the public narrative.
