Here a young German, using only the pseudonym Kluf, freely approached the American consulate in Marseille to report everything could about the recruitment of German nationals, and the ease with which they moved through supposedly clandestine networks. While his story rang true, there was no sure way to verify the information and officials questioned it on several grounds. Why did he voluntarily come to the American consulate, knowing there was no way to account for his anonymity or security? Why was he so free with information against his soldier comrades while claiming to be a German nationalist?
